The downsides are that the learning curve can be very steep as the game doesn’t do a very good job of explaining to you which structures do which tasks and which ones do which job better so you have to learn via trial and error and the main campaign is rather short. Once you hit a point where your people begin dying off everything spirals out of control from there and it can be very challenging to get out of that death spiral. It’s very aesthetically pleasing, the story is very gripping and engaging and every law has its benefits and negatives which will force you to make tough decisions for the greater good.

Coal is required to power your generators which keep your people from freezing to death and the longer the game goes on the colder it gets which in turn means you have to draw more and more from your generator which costs more coal.

Each resource is vitally important however I would argue that wood and coal are the most essential, steel doesn’t become as prominent until mid game and I never seemed to have much trouble gathering raw food. It forces you to think very hard before each move you make, resources are very limited and will continue to be throughout the entire game so you must balance them very carefully.
